Pond Ecosystem

A pond ecosystem is an excellent source to study the relationship of many organisms across various trophic levels, mainly producers, consumers, and decomposers. The temperature of a pond changes with the air temperature and is relatively uniform. The pond has a muddy, silty bottom with aquatic plants surrounding the edges and throughout the water. The energy to support plant life comes from the sun, providing for the process of photosynthesis to take place. The creation of nutrients is essential is sustaining both plant and animal life in this ecosystem, but too much nutrients can lead to eutrophication and algae blooms. Organisms and animals also rely on this ecosystem to sustain life. Animals that can be seen living in this pond are fish, frogs, and other insects, such as a water beetle. The pond is essential in providing nourishment for the surrounding plants and animals.
